At First Friends Nursery in Alton, we believe that every child’s voice matters. That’s why we’ve created our very own Children’s Committee—a special initiative that empowers children to share their ideas and make their dreams come true!
Each month, a new group of children joins the committee, ensuring that everyone has a chance to be heard and to create magical experiences for themselves and their friends.
This month, the Children’s Committee planned something truly special—a pet day! The children wanted to meet and learn about different animals, so we made it happen. We were lucky enough to welcome a wonderful variety of furry and feathered friends, including Whisper the budgie, Loki the cat, two bunnies named Hagrid and Lupin, as well as two guinea pigs and a tortoise! Some children loved stroking the animals, while others preferred to observe from a distance, taking in every detail. We even had the chance to feed Loki some treats and drop fresh broccoli stalks into the rabbits’ hutch.
And that’s not all! In a recent committee meeting, one child had a brilliant idea: “Let’s go to the bike ramps!” Inspired by this suggestion, the children and their friends took their bikes and scooters on an adventure to the local skate park. Though some were a little unsure at first, it wasn’t long before they gained confidence, zooming down the ramps with huge smiles on their faces!
The Children’s Committee isn’t just about fun; it’s about empowering children to shape their experiences. Some of the exciting activities that have come to life thanks to their ideas include:
Outdoor Adventure Day – The children received a letter asking, “If you could spend all day outside, what activities would you like to do?” Over some squash in the garden, they shared their ideas —bubbles, mud kitchen play.
Exciting Nursery Trips – When asked where they’d love to visit, the children had big ideas! Some wanted to go to the farm (one even suggested riding the pigs!), others dreamed of a picnic in the park, and one child was especially excited about the idea of a bus ride adventure!
Jane Noble, Nursery Manager at First Friends Alton, shared her thoughts on the initiative:
“The Children’s Committee is at the heart of our nursery. It’s incredible to see the children take ownership of their ideas and watch their confidence grow as we bring them to life. Whether it’s a trip to the skate park, a special pet day, or a visit to the local care home, every activity is led by their imaginations. Seeing their excitement and joy is what makes our job so special.”

The Children’s Committee not only creates joyful experiences but also nurtures independence, decision-making skills, and self-confidence as they watch their visions turn into reality.
