Town Mayor

The Town Mayor is elected annually each May and is the Chairman of the Council. The Mayor presides over Full Council Meetings and represents the Town Council in her/his civic role. The Deputy Mayor provides civic support to the Town Mayor and will often be able to attend functions when the Mayor is unavailable. The Town Mayor for this civic year, May 2026 to May 2027 is Councillor Barbara Tansey
and the Deputy Town Mayor is Councillor Chris Botten.

The Town Mayor’s chosen charity for this year is Home-Start.

Town Mayor’s Chain

The Town Council has a Badge of Office and Chain which the Town Mayor wears on official occasions. The Badge shows the town’s crest comprising a shield divided into four quarters containing the red rose of Hampshire, a stock of wheat and two oast houses signifying Alton’s close agricultural associations and a crossed sword and battle axe recalling a part of Alton’s history in the clash of arms in the neighbourhood of the parish church in 1643 at the time of the Civil War. The chain has past Town Mayors’ names engraved on each link.
