Residents may well have wondered what was happening in the Public Gardens over the last couple of weeks as they watched construction works taking place. Alton Town Council is delighted to announce the installation of a new Community Canopy which will not only provide a covered area for events and musical entertainment taking place in the park but also provide a social infrastructure that is easily accessible by residents and visitors alike in the centre of Alton.
The new canopy has been designed to be able to be accessed by all ages including the children attending the Fun Friday entertainment in the summer holidays, residents attending the brass bands that perform at the Picnic in the Park series of community gatherings and people looking to improve their health and well-being joining in our Park Yoga. As a reminder, all these activities run by the Town Council are free for members of the community to attend and join in with.
The new canopy will also provide protection to visitors to the Public Gardens from what we all know as the unreliable British weather, whether that is from the strong sun or the heavy downpours enabling it to be used all year round and in all weather conditions.
The improvements in the gardens form part of an exciting development following the vandalism of the marquee last year when that installation had to be taken down and removed. It is hoped that this new wooden feature will enhance the garden’s usability and ensure a more secure and lasting solution for community gatherings within the park.
We’re pleased to acknowledge that Alton Town Council received funding from the EHDC Rural Grant Scheme for the new permanent canopy, and we hope that residents and visitors to Alton will be able to make full use of the feature.
The first event that it will be used at is the Community Big Lunch on Sunday 8th June.
