King’s Pond: Decision On Considered Options

On 10 December 2025, Alton Town Council considered the options around King’s Pond. The project is at Stage One and the Council has been considering two options: dredging the existing pond and making improvements (“Dredging Plus”); or dredging and retaining a smaller pond plus routing a separate meandering river through the site (“Pond & River”). The options had to be looked at again because the favoured river scheme would have required engineering works on land not owned by Alton Town Council. Councillors heard from members of the public and debated the options.

The Council resolved by 7 votes to 5 with 1 abstention to take forward Stage One on the basis of comparing two options: dredging with improvement works and a straighter river channel through the site with a smaller pond (formerly called option “3c”). The process to procure a contractor to design and investigate the feasibility of both options will now restart. The Council also resolved to create and gradually build up a fund for ongoing future works for the site.

Full information on the options discussed is available on the King’s Pond page:
