Active Alton Directory

Regular physical activity is the most important measure anyone can take to prevent disease and maintain good health into old age. It is easily more effective than anything else your doctor can prescribe to keep you well. Everyone needs to know what is available out there to encourage them to get active and stay active

To this end, the Active Alton Working Party created a Directory of all the local clubs for exercise and other physical activities and all the local venues which host them. They had great help from Alton Town Council and were generously funded by EHDC Councillors and the Alton Society. The Directory was published as a booklet and as an electronic version on Alton Town Council website.

The booklet is widely available in such places as the library, the Community Centre, doctors surgeries etc. The online version is found here.

The Directory has been very popular. Some 2,000 of the printed versions have been distributed and the webpage has received over 3,700 hits in the past 12 months.

The Directory was updated two years ago and now needs further refreshment. If any of our readers knows of, or attends, exercise sessions or clubs which have been set up recently, please go to the website and check whether they are included.

If you know of such exercise opportunities, clubs or venues which are not included, the Active Alton Working Party would be extremely grateful if you could complete the online form. We would also be grateful to hear of any changes to the details of clubs etc which are on the site, using the same online form.

A member of the Working Party says “It does not matter what physical activity you choose, the important thing for your health is that you do something. The Directory provides you with the widest possibility range of choices – just choose an activity which you will enjoy. The more you like it, the more you are likely to stick to it.”
