This award, named in honour of the first chairman of the Alton Society, aims to acknowledge excellence in one or more projects relating to building, conservation, landscaping or other environmental improvement that have enhanced the visual quality or the amenities of the Alton area.
The range of qualifying projects cover broadly:
(a) New Building or Development;
(b) Conversion or Conservation of an Existing Building;
(c) Landscaping or other Environmental Improvement (not necessarily involving building)
Consideration will be limited to projects effectively completed at some point within the period of 24 months ending on 30 September 2025. IE Between 1st October 2023 and 30th September 2025
The main criteria applicable include:
- Consistency & quality of design including quality of the materials
- Quality of execution / construction
- Sustainable design and construction.
- Contribution to the surroundings
- Contribution to life in the Alton area
Nominations are welcomed from all Alton Society members and all members of the public.
Nominations should ideally be received by the Alton Society by the 1st July 2025 and sent for the attention of committee member Paul Ebbutt by email at or by post to 38 Rookswood Alton Hants GU34 2LD. All nominations correspondence should be titled ‘Alton Society Ambrose Award
Nominations should include a brief description why the project deserves consideration with accompanying photographs plus details of any associated design organisation and contractor(s).
The Alton Society committee selects a short list for consideration by the award panel.
