The Town Council, as part of its ongoing commitment to tourism and promotion in the town, decided that Alton's historic market town image would be enhanced significantly by the appointment of a Town Crier.  In 2003 Alton's very first Town Crier, Mr Stan Whitcher, was appointed.

Following Mr Whitcher's retirement in early 2019, Mr Dave Parsons was appointed Town Crier.  Dave has lived in Alton with his family for over 20 years and is a former Regimental Sergeant Major serving in the Army for 25 years. 

The Town Crier's main activities are to promote Town Council events and civic occasions.
