The Town Mayor is elected annually each May and presides over full meetings of the council and represents the Town Council at many functions as the principal citizen of the town.
The Town Council has a Badge of Office and Chain which the Town Mayor wears on official occasions. The Badge shows the town's crest comprising a shield divided into four quarters containing the red rose of Hampshire, a stock of wheat and two oast houses signifying Alton's close agricultural associations and a crossed sword and battle axe recalling a part of Alton's history in the clash of arms in the neighbourhood of the parish church in 1643 at the time of the Civil War. The chain has past Town Mayors' names engraved on each link.
Whilst the Town Mayor manages his own diary, if you would like to invite him to any function, please complete the attached form and return to the Town Hall. This form will tell the Town Mayor everything they need to know about your event and what is expected of them. The Town Mayor will then contact you to let you know whether they or the Deputy Mayor (Councillor Robert Saunders) is available. [Town Mayor's Function Request Form]
Councillor Willoughby's charities for the year are Help for Heroes and Alton Buckle. His Chaplain is the Reverend Peter Doores from St Lawrence Church.
